Community of Trees (Hellenic name Κοινωνία των Δέντρων) was founded in September 2012 as a non-profit company whose main purpose is to develop environmental and cultural projects.
Community of Trees’ first project was its participation in the Eleonora’s Falcon Project on the island of Andros in 2016, subsidised by the European funding programme “LIFE”.
In 2015 Community of Trees began the Koumas project: the creation of a forest-park ecosystem at the heart of Patmos, consisting exclusively of indigenous trees. The same project includes the repurposing of the old Koumas stone quarry and the rehabilitation of its surrounding land.
In spring 2016, a team of scientists from the Institute for the Mediterranean Forest Ecosystems, a division of the Ministry of Agriculture, visited Patmos for site surveillance, soil analysis, and a list of native trees. In autumn 2016, they delivered the results of their work to Community of Trees in a detailed preliminary study, which forms an important basis for the Koumas project. More information is available in the study report.
In summer 2018, Community of Trees organised a piano recital by pianist Emily Mesko at the Apocalypse Amphitheatre of Patmos. Community of Trees also produced a CD.
In winter 2018, Community of Trees submitted the Koumas file to the Municipality of Patmos for approval and land rental.
