The Koumas Forest

Community of Trees aims to create a forest park on Koumas hill, consisting mainly of endemic trees.

PatmosCurrent project

The intention is to create the conditions for an autonomous local ecosystem and a place for recreation, culture, education, and environmental awareness.

Why Koumas hill

  • It lies between Skala and Kampos. A provincial road provides access to water, electricity, and other infrastructure needed during the first stages.
  • The organisation's source states that the Municipality of Patmos owns the whole hill.
  • The hill permits separate planting zones based on orientation, sunlight, and wind.
  • An old stone quarry could support a simple open-air amphitheatre after restoration, connecting environmental and cultural work.

The Koumas Forest in detail

Koumas hill borders the Skala–Kampos road. It is two kilometres from Skala port and two kilometres from Kampos. Its eastern boundary reaches the coast between the valleys that lead to Meloi and Agriolivadi.

The organisation aims to design the park through scientific study. Endemic trees have priority, including threatened species and species that disappeared locally but still grow on neighbouring islands.

Community of Trees invited the Institute of Mediterranean and Forest Ecosystems to inspect the site, sample the soil, and prepare a preliminary report. The report provides the basis for further development.

The source describes cooperation with the Municipality of Patmos and the search for national, European, and private support. The project requires studies and permits before implementation.
